Australia, 1996–2008

No wicketkeeper changed what the position could be quite like Gilchrist. He finished with 905 international dismissals across 96 Tests, 287 ODIs, and 13 T20Is, but the number that actually shifted cricket was his batting: a Test average of 47.60 from number seven, and 9,619 ODI runs at nearly a run a ball as an opener. Before Gilchrist, wicketkeepers were picked for their gloves and tolerated with the bat. After him, teams expected both — and no one has fully replicated the combination since.

2) Mark Boucher

South Africa, 1997–2012

The record holder. Boucher finished his career with 998 international dismissals — still the most by any wicketkeeper in history — including 555 in Tests, the all-time Test record, from 147 matches. He added 424 dismissals in 295 ODIs and 19 in 25 T20Is before an eye injury sustained in a tour match ended his career in 2012. His consistency behind the stumps across 15 years, more than any single spectacular moment, is what the record reflects.

3) MS Dhoni

India, 2004–2020

The only captain to win all three ICC white-ball trophies, and statistically the best stumper the game has produced. Dhoni finished with 829 international dismissals — third all-time — including a record 91 in T20Is and 123 ODI stumpings, both the most by any wicketkeeper in those formats.
